Product development begins by separating customer preference from production-critical information. A visually attractive concept is not enough if size, structure, material and approval criteria remain undefined.
Define the Product Before Selecting the Process
A useful development brief answers practical questions before the first sample is cut. Szoneier reviews the intended vehicle or wheel application, single or multi-wheel configuration, tire dimensions, camera requirement, installation method, outdoor environment, artwork type, expected quantity, target positioning and packaging route. These inputs determine whether the program is a standard customization, a new pattern, a vehicle development project or a broader ODM program.
The commercial target also matters. A premium automotive cover, an RV four-pack, a dealer-logo program and a personalized photo cover can share a circular or wheel-cover function while requiring completely different materials, print systems, sewing structures and approval methods. Defining the market position early prevents expensive engineering decisions from being made after a sample already exists.
The output should be a working specification rather than a loose collection of messages. For development control, relevant project information can be linked to the product SKU, tire size, vehicle, material ID, pattern ID, artwork version, printing process, camera version, sample status, QC standard and packaging requirement. When one of these variables changes, the effect on cost, timing or validation can be reviewed before the change reaches bulk production.
Benchmark Existing Products Without Copying Their Problems
Reference products are useful because they show how a design behaves in the real world, but a development program should identify the reasons behind the construction rather than reproduce every existing detail.
Break the Reference Into Engineering Decisions

- Does the elastic or bungee hold the product securely without overstressing seams?
- Is the material heavier than the application requires?

A reference can also expose cost that does not create customer value. For example, increasing fabric denier can raise weight, carton size and freight while providing little improvement for a product used in a moderate environment. A decorative process may look premium on a sample but introduce a high process MOQ that conflicts with the planned SKU count. A camera reinforcement can be strong but visually intrusive if it was developed independently from the artwork.
The purpose of feasibility review is to turn these observations into decisions before prototype development. The result may be a close technical reproduction, a cost-engineered alternative, a material upgrade, a revised fitment system or a new structure. The target is a product that can be manufactured repeatedly for the intended market, not a one-off sample that happens to look similar to the reference.
